PRESIDENTS MESSAGE

President's Message 2011

Time marches on and the first decade of the Twenty-First Century has been written.  For your Alumni Association it was a great one.  Eleven incredibly talented alumni were honored as our "Alumnus of the Year" and our Awards Committee continues to receive new names each year. Many of our honorees are also a part of the "Alumni Wall of Fame" at the high school. It's a wonderful daily reminder to our students of the vast opportunities that BGHS prepares them for as they too start on their career paths. I encourage you to stop by the school to view this inspiring display of "Hornet Pride", you will be amazed at how many you may know.  If Vice Principal, Mr. Rande Clevenger, is available I am sure he would be pleased to share some info about each one.  He may also tell you about the Renaissance Program which honors fifty students at a VIP breakfast three each school year.  Your Alumni Association has been a long time supporter of this program and also presents each honored student with a pen.  In this past decade we have recognized ten more gifted teachers as our "Teacher of the Year" bringing our total to thirty-two since our first award in 1978 to Hazel Crabb.  Do you realize how few that is when you consider the number of years Beech Grove has had schools and the number of wonderful teachers who have dedicated their lives to the students in our classrooms.  We have so many to be proud of and look forward to receiving more nominations for this special recognition.   Last year you had the opportunity to meet our "Alumnus of the Year" Max Brenton, class of '64 and our "Teacher of the Year" Glen Bohannon on the Beech Grove Community TV Channel. They were interviewed by our favorite public relations man and "auctioneer", retired BGHS Principal, Harvey Warrner.  You need to come to our Annual Reunion Celebration Dinner to enjoy one of Harvey's lively auctions which helps us raise money for our general operating fund.  Everyone really enjoyed last year's auction and we brought in the most money ever.  Thanks, Harvey we really do appreciate you.  At graduation we again presented each graduate a special keepsake key ring welcoming them to the alumni association.  Last year was special for me since my own granddaughter, Myranda Tryon, was presented a key ring by me as she stepped off the stage.  Thanks everyone for letting me represent you at these functions, it's always an honor.   We were deeply sadden by the unexpected passing of our Golf Tournament Chairman, Steve Achmann.  Our Golf Tournament was pulled together by Bob Thomas and his team decided to be called "Achmann's Army" in memory of their classmate.  Fifty-seven golfers teed off at Southern Dunes for one of our most successful golf outings ever. They also donated $720 to our Scholarship Fund. At our Annual Reunion Celebration Dinner the  next evening the class of 1960 was honored as the Fifty-Year Class and other special class reunions were also acknowledged.   Awards were presented to our Teacher of the Year, Glen Bohannon and Alumnus of the Year, Max Brenton. Eight 2010 graduates each received $1,000 scholarships. This decade we have awarded over $100,000 in scholarships to eighty-eight graduates, thanks to your generous support! The Fall Festival Parade again saw a strong participation with several alumni units.  Our Annual Homecoming Tailgate Party was also a great success.  We are beginning to see more Mini Class Reunions at this event! It's a great time for the five and ten year classes to reconnect. Next fall we are planning to invite all past Homecoming Kings and Queens to participate in the parade and festivities.  We continue to reach out to all of our alumni by way of TV, Newspaper, Web site, Newsletter and remember to look for us on Face Book.  I am proud to be a part of this organization, proud to be a Hornet....yesterday, today and always.  Let's keep in touch and "Let's Keep the Hive Buzzing" for generations to come.  Remember...."The future of the B.G.H.S. Alumni Association is in your hands."

Your President, Barbara “Cookie” O'Neill Simmerman, Class of '62
