PRESIDENTS MESSAGE
President’s Message 2010... Wow, the past year certainly was filled with a lot of new events for your BGHS Alumni Association! We took part in the BGHS Book Sale to help support the Renaissance Program of which we have also been a supporting partner for many years. In the spring we hosted a booth at the PTO's Annual Garage Sale. On the Beech Grove Community TV Channel you had the opportunity to meet our Teacher of the Year, James Flanders, our Alumnus of the Year, Kathleen Greene Gosser, Marlene Bultman from the Fifty Year Class and Kay Little Denning, Chairman of our Scholarship Committee. At graduation we presented each graduate a special keepsake key ring welcoming them to the alumni association. Thanks go to Deb Barnett, class of '67, for taking on the task of pulling our Annual Golf Outing together and also finding a new chairman, Steve Ackmann, for next year. It was a great day for golf and we welcomed participants from far and near. The next day we held our Thirty-third Annual Reunion Celebration with an attendance of nearly 200. This year in addition to our silent auction to raise funds for our general operating fund we also had a live auction of a few special items. Retired BGHS Principal, Harvey Warrner, and cheerleaders from the Class of 2009 and our Fifty Year Class helped to make this a really fun event besides being a great fund raiser. Awards were presented to our Teacher of the Year, Alumnus of the Year and David Van Horn was honored by his class as the “Outstanding Alumnus of the Fifty Year Class”. Eleven 2009 graduates received $12,000 in scholarships. Our Fifty Year Class proudly presented $6600 to our scholarship fund in a well rehearsed skit.....with everyone wearing crowns! In July we hosted an All Alumni Family Picnic with music by graduates from the class of 2009, “Fading Further” and Betty Collins portrayed the poet Sarah T. Bolton. Hot Dogs were provided by one of our favorite old time hangouts, Edwards' Drive-In. It was a beautiful day with alumni families from five decades represented. In the Fall Festival Parade we had units from several classes making it our strongest participation to date. Our Annual Homecoming Tailgate Party was also a great success. This year we had our reception tents in the parking lot and everyone enjoyed the easy access to the registration table and alumni information....but most of all they loved the fantastic photo display provided by our Fifty Year Class. Special thanks go to Marlene Bultman for making such a great memento for her class. We continue to reach out to all of our alumni by way of TV, Newspaper, Web site, Newsletter and now we even have a Face Book page where nearly twelve hundred alumni are keeping in touch. I am proud to be a part of this organization, proud to be a Hornet....yesterday, today and always. Let's keep in touch and Let's Keep the Hive Buzzing for generations to come. The future is in your hands. Your President, Barbara “Cookie” O'Neill Simmerman, Class of '62
