BG Alumni Call-Out for the Matt English Traveling Trophy Game
A brand new season will begin Tuesday night, November 22, 2022 for the Beech Grove Boys Basketball Hornets as they’ll face the Greenfield-Central Cougars at the Cougar Fieldhouse in Greenfield. The Hornets, under new head coach Joe Rihm, will not only begin the season as reigning Class 3A state champions from a season ago, but will also be playing for a trophy that evening. The Matt English Traveling Trophy, which was inaugurated last year by the Beech Grove High School Alumni Association, will be at stake when the visiting Hornets face the host Cougars. In the inaugural contest last season, Beech Grove defeated Greenfield-Central 56-45 on the Matt English Court at “The Hive” to lay first claim to the Traveling Trophy.
The trophy is named for Matt English, who was a standout basketball player at Greenfield-Central High School and Bethel University in McKenzie, TN as well as boys basketball head coach and athletic director at Beech Grove High School.
Beech Grove would like to have many alumni from the Alumni Association to be present for this particular occasion. Also, Matt English’s widow Angela, his mother Beth and sister Jill as well as other family members will be present as the Hornets make their first visit to Greenfield since the 2018-19 season, not to mention the team’s first visit since Coach English passed away from brain cancer December 10, 2018 at the age of 45. The Matt English Foundation has been established in Matt’s memory. Tipoff for the varsity contest is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. with the junior varsity game preceding it at 6 p.m. That’s Tuesday night, November 22, from Greenfield-Central High School on a night you won’t want to miss.
